HydroHarvest is a student-led organization aiming to combat food insecurity in Northern Virginia by empowering communities to sustainably grow their own food. We utilize hydroponics - an innovative method of growing plants in plants in water - to create hydroponic grow buckets distributed to families in need.

According to Capital Area Food Bank’s 2024 Hunger Report, 27% of residents in Fairfax County are food insecure. In particular, a significant gap exists in reliable access to fresh, sustainable fruits and vegetables, as sustainably grown produce can be up to 52.6% more expensive than conventionally grown food.

Our hydroponic grow buckets help to meet this need by providing a low-maintenance and sustainable method of growing produce. Our grow buckets are made from food-grade buckets sourced from restaurants, reducing plastic waste. They require minimal space and minimal maintenance, eliminating the need for outdoor space to grow food. Additionally, compared to traditional agriculture, hydroponics grows more food with less water and can grow food year-round. Join us on our mission to combat food insecurity in Northern Virginia through hydroponics.
